Meet Harry

17-year-old Harry McCaughey shares his experience on volunteering at BHF shop in Teddington, and how it’s helped him meet new people and transition from school to the world of work.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

I was looking for work experience. I had given my CV to all the shops on my local high street and was having trouble getting a job – I decided that volunteering would help get some work experience. As I want to have a career in medicine, I want to get involved and give back. I also thought it would be a good way to meet my own age and make some new friends.

What do you do at the shop?

I do a range of tasks at the shop from steaming, the till and working on the shop floor helping keep the shop clean. I’m happy to get involved in everything – the shop team are really good at explaining what a task is and why it needs to be done.

What do you enjoy about volunteering?

The social atmosphere – it’s great to get along with everyone. I came to meet people my own age, but it has also been a great way to interact with a diverse range of people that I wouldn’t usually get to talk to and engage with.

Would you recommend volunteering to others?

Yes – it has been a really helpful transition between school and work. It’s given me some great work experience and an understanding of the workplace environment, and I’ve met some great people.
