Meet Alex

Find out how BHF has supported a deaf volunteer, Alex, to grow confidence and independence.

Alex Bodsworth has been volunteering at the Tiverton shop since September 2023, and is deaf, but this hasn’t stopped him from overcoming challenges and getting stuck into volunteering.

Alex moved miles away from his parents, in Northampton, to Devon, so he could lead a semi-independent life within a deaf community with other deaf or profoundly deaf adults.
Despite living so far away from his family, Alex has amazing support from his Tiverton team and loves volunteering and supporting British Heart Foundation.

When Alex first started at the shop, his team would show him what to do, now he works independently, and feels involved with the team, as they always take care for him, and include him in their conversations.
Everyone in the team, especially Doreen who taught Alex how to use the tagging gun and hanging clothes, patiently teaches Alex the skills he needs.

Alex always keeps himself busy tagging and hanging clothes, pricing the books and DVDs. He previously volunteered in Costa Coffee, and a charity café, which just highlights the determination and wonderful work ethic Alex has.

From his experiences in the shop, Alex has really grown in confidence, not just in work life, but in his personal life and is really thriving living in Devon.

Alex loves his Tiverton team, and has become an intrinsic part of them.
Thank you Alex for all the hard work and support you give!
