34 years of BHF Joy

Joy Blake part of the Faringdon Fundraising Group shares her story on how she started volunteering for BHF 34 years ago.

Joy’s brother-in-law, passed away just two weeks before his 50th birthday from a sudden cardiac arrest.

The local vicar at the time, Jack, came to visit Joy and her sister, after his passing.

Jack had recently moved to Faringdon and had set up a local BHF Branch, having been part of a similar group at his previous parish. Joy expressed a desire to be able to do something positive to support the BHF and so Jack casually asked why don’t you come and join our group?

So, that was the start of Joy’s journey with BHF, she joined the Faringdon branch in April 1990.

She took on the role of secretary and has been in this position ever since, and her sister also joined the group in 1998 - together they’re quite a force!

Many years ago in Faringdon they held an annual Sing for your Supper event, and Joy took this over and used it as an opportunity to fundraise for BHF. This has now morphed into a Coronation Supper event, and she runs it every year to this day, along with supporting the other hard working committee members with events such as the annual quiz night, monthly market stalls, Christmas light events, coffee mornings and whatever other amazing ideas they can come up with to raise money for BHF.

The group has raised over £150,000 since 2000 for the BHF. Joy is an incredible woman and is as passionate today about fundraising for us as she was back when she joined in 1990.

Thank you, Joy, for all your support and dedication for the last 34 years and counting!
