On Friday 10 May 2013, Richard Fieldsend lost his fight for life. Richard was an inspiring supporter of our Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, and played a major part in our fight to find a cure for heart failure.
After suffering a huge heart attack aged 44, Richard was left to cope with the disabling effects of severe heart failure. He used to be fit and sporty, playing football semi-professionally, but heart failure meant he struggled to walk even 50 yards.
"I am a fighter. Every day I appreciate that I have another day. And I am thankful, because it's so great to be alive."
Richard spoke of the fact he had "lost just about everything" and said that heart failure "literally took my breath away". Yet despite his struggles, Richard was always determined to fight on.
Richard's family has pledged their support to us to continue using his story to inspire others to join our fight.
His brother Andrew Kerrison also shared his story with us.
