Chloe MacArthur, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the BHF, says:
Many people are looking for ways to stay warm in winter, and with rising energy bills, there has been new interest in heated blankets and clothing. If you have a pacemaker or an ICD (implanted cardioverter defibrillator), you might be wondering whether these can cause problems for you.
Many heating devices are safe to use if you have a pacemaker or an ICD. If in doubt, check your manufacturer’s guidance or ask your pacing clinic. Most cardiac device manufacturers have guidance online about which items could cause a problem for your device.
For example, two of the largest device manufacturers, Boston Scientific and Medtronic, list electric blankets and heating pads as “safe under normal use” or “no known risk”. Boston Scientific also lists heated motorcycle vests as “safe to use” (Medtronic does not include guidance about heated clothing).
If you’re thinking of using something that sits directly over your pacemaker or ICD, such as a heated jacket, check with your pacing clinic to make sure.
Remember that your implanted device will return to the settings that your doctor chose as soon as you step away from any electronic equipment that affects its function.
