Volunteer survey: key highlights

In January we launched our Volunteer Engagement Survey which provided us with an excellent insight into our volunteer experience at the BHF – what’s working well and where we need to improve.

Thank you to our volunteers who took the time to share their feedback. Some of the areas of exploration included whether our volunteers would recommend the BHF as a good place to volunteer, if they feel treated fairly, and whether they feel thanked for their gift of time. We also investigated topics such as: the impact of volunteering on mental health, physical health, employability skills, and whether volunteering generates the feeling of helping their local community.

The results gathered from this survey are crucial to the future of volunteering at the BHF.  They tell us what’s working well, and what could be improved. We have already started shaping our volunteering experience based on the feedback gathered from this survey to ensure we are continually offering our volunteers a world-class experience.

Following an in-depth analysis of the survey results, we are delighted to share a summary of the key highlights across volunteering:

94% would recommend BHF as a place to volunteer

Overall, 17% of our volunteers across the BHF completed this survey. We are pleased that within this group, almost all our volunteers (94%) said that they would recommend the BHF as a good place to volunteer. This result has won an award with our survey providers as being the best engagement result amongst other charities they work with, which is wonderful to see.

96% of volunteers feel valued

The majority of the volunteers (96%) feel thanked for their volunteering and state that volunteering allows them to help their local community (98%). Almost all of our volunteers (95%) feel that people at the BHF are treated fairly irrespective of age, disability, gender re-assignment, marriage and civil partnerships, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

92% say volunteering improves their mental health

We are also delighted to share the positive impact that volunteering has on mental health, with 92% stating that volunteering has improved their mental health and 94% stating that volunteering has helped them to feel less isolated and lonely. Most volunteers (89%) said that the BHF gives high priority to the wellbeing, welfare and safety of their volunteers.
