Our partnership with Tesco

The UK's largest retailer, Tesco, has partnered with us, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK to help tackle some of the UK's biggest health challenges.

About the partnership

In 2018, British Heart Foundation (BHF), Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK joined forces with Tesco in a one-of-a-kind health partnership. We are proud of the impressive record of impact that our ‘Helping you to live healthier’ partnership has. Together we have delivered insights, interventions and raised over £29m for the charities, all with the vision of improving the nation’s health.

The partnership has engaged millions of customers and colleagues through health initiatives and fundraising. From 2019’s World Record Breaking Dance Beats event, to the £3m round up at till campaign run during the height of the pandemic, the support of colleagues and customers has fuelled the charities’ life-changing work and continues to do so.

Through Tesco’s influence and reach we’ve been able to build health insight, trial and evaluate behaviour change activities, giving us a fantastic basis to drive forward our work together into the future.

Let's talk

The ‘Let’s Talk’ pharmacy service was launched in 2022. The programme delivers specialist training to Tesco pharmacists and pharmacy colleagues via a suite of E-learning modules to better support anyone seeking information and support who is at risk of developing or living with heart and circulatory diseases, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

Around 4 in 10 cases of cancer and 5 in 10 cases of type 2 diabetes could be prevented. We know that heart and circulatory diseases are often preventable too, which is why our work is so important.

By supporting people to make lifestyle changes and referring those with any concerning symptoms, the initiative could help save thousands of lives every year from some of the UK’s most prevalent and serious diseases.

All Tesco pharmacists and pharmacy colleagues who have completed the training wear a special ‘Let’s Talk’ badge so that customers know they are in the very best hands when they need to speak to someone in confidence.

Tesco and the health charity partners are encouraging shoppers to take advantage of the convenience of having their local pharmacist in store. Customers can benefit from the free advice whilst shopping and get support in making positive changes or gain information on concerning signs or symptoms.

"Our Tesco pharmacy colleagues can provide information, resources and support on ways to help reduce your risk of developing cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease. They are available for a private and confidential chat in our pharmacy consultation room, something 15 per cent of people said was a benefit of visiting a pharmacy for information and/or advice about a health-related concern.

"As part of our role in supporting community health, we are encouraging customers to shop for affordable, healthy and sustainable food. Now, we want to encourage everyone to take advantage of the resources and support available in Tesco pharmacies to help people live healthier lives. So, if you’re shopping at Tesco, go to the pharmacy counter and one of our pharmacy colleagues wearing a ‘Let’s Talk’ badge can help you."
