Our guiding principles
There are 3 principles that underpin our research strategy. Each one has scientific excellence and impact at its heart.

Our objectives
Guided by our principles, our strategy sets out 5 objectives that will inform key changes to our funding approach. We will:
- Grow UK investment in cardiovascular research, closing the funding gap between investment and the devastating impact of cardiovascular disease.
- Grow the strength, breadth and diversity of the UK’s cardiovascular research workforce, enabling it to power the discoveries of the future.
- Increase BHF’s investment in prevention research, innovations and partnerships to stop heart disease before it starts.
- Grow BHF’s investment in clinical and translational research, leading to a faster translation of scientific discoveries into patient benefit, while creating a new income stream through commercialisation.
- Significantly increase the BHF’s research investment in strategic funding initiatives and grand challenges in areas of unmet need.
Our leadership and schemes
To achieve our strategy, we've redefined our research leadership team and modified our funding schemes. We will make changes to our schemes over the next 12 months and continue to refine them in the coming years.
