Rising to new challenges
Our mission is more important than ever before. After decades of progress in saving lives, we’re seeing increasing numbers of people die from heart and circulatory diseases before they reach their 75th birthday.
Spiralling waiting lists for vital heart tests and treatments are putting lives at risk and creating untold anxiety for thousands of families. And the cost-of-living crisis is making it harder to raise funds for our lifesaving research.
At the BHF, we've risen to these challenges to provide a lifeline of support and hope to millions of families in need. We've funded bold new research initiatives that hold the promise for new treatments and cures. And we've taught thousands of people how to save a life using CPR.

What we achieved in 2024
Take a look at what we achieved this year with your support.
£180.4m raised
We raised an amazing £180.4m of total income, net of retail costs, thanks to our supporters and fundraisers.
£119.3m awarded
We awarded £119.3m in research grants. £430m of BHF-funded research is now underway.
703 research projects
We fund 703 research projects, 449 lead researchers, 298 students and 1,262 research staff in 49 institutions across the UK.
£368m in financial reserves
Our research commitments are protected by strong financial reserves of over £368m.
Improving cardiac arrest survival
We're building a nation of lifesavers. A total of 124,000 people have now completed our online CPR training, RevivR. We also have 87,000 defibrillators registered on The Circuit, our national defibrillator network. Together, they will ensure more people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the coming years.

Improving the nation’s heart health
Working with our partners, we have supported people to lower their risk of heart conditions including heart attacks and strokes. We have also been a constant voice for heart patients, campaigning across the four nations to influence change that helps to save and improve lives.
Support our campaigns
We’re always amazed at the lengths our supporters will go to power our lifesaving work. In challenging times, nearly 20,000 supporters took part in walks, runs, cycles and swims to raise almost £6m. Record numbers of supporters also took part in our fundraising challenges to raise £3.2m. And our amazing fundraising groups raised over £800,000.

Our future focus
At BHF, we’re on the cusp of revolutionary advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, genomics, and regenerative medicine. In the face of significant challenges, we have been there for millions of families in urgent need of support and breakthroughs in 2023-24.
But there is far more we need to do to achieve our vision of a world free from the fear of heart and circulatory diseases. We look to the future from a position of strength and optimism. Our aim is to inspire the support needed to take advantage of groundbreaking science and to make the research advances millions of people urgently need.

We need your support
In the toughest of times, we’ve continued to invest in lifesaving research and make amazing discoveries to support millions of people affected by heart and circulatory diseases. Every person we support, every life we help save and every scientific discovery we make is because of our BHF-funded researchers, volunteers, fundraisers, partners and colleagues.
None of this is possible without your support. But there is far more we need to do support people affected by heart and circulatory conditions. We will not stop until we get there.
