Being a sustainable charity

Links between environmental factors and cardiovascular disease are clear. At BHF, we’re determined to fund research for cures and treatments in a responsible way.

Our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) roadmap

BHF's Strategy to 2030 highlights our environmental and social commitments. We're creating a healthy, inclusive workplace and making a positive difference to society.

Our progress so far

  • Our retail operation contributes significantly to the UK’s circular economy and communities.
  • Our Igniting Change strategy demonstrates our commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion in all areas of our work.
  • We have programmes underway to reduce our environmental impact in many areas – from our transport to supply chains.
  • We’ve reduced our energy and transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 40% since 2019/20.

We’re proud of our progress – but we’re not stopping there. We want and need to do more.

We have committed to become a net zero organisation by 2045 or earlier. This covers all areas of our activities from the heating we use in our BHF offices and stores, to the emissions generated from within our supply chain, through to how the research we fund is undertaken. This means Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions are all included in this commitment.

As part of this plan, we are committing to a short-term target of at least a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and at least 30% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030.
