Through our commitment to beating heartbreak from all heart and circulatory diseases and their risk factors, we fund research into many different conditions.
In the 2023/24 financial year, 53% of our new research awards fit within the conditions listed below. The rest are focused on conditions not listed or encompass broad research areas or support multiple projects (e.g. Accelerator awards, BHF Centres of Research Excellence, Infrastructure grants and Strategic initiatives).

Clinical trials by type of research
We are currently supporting 46 clinical trials worth around £40m. They provide crucial evidence that diagnostic tests or treatments are safe and effective.
Clinical trials
We fund clinical trials that aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment across a range of heart and circulatory conditions, as well as trials that aim to prevent or treat heart and circulatory diseases in conditions that increase their risk, such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease. We are currently supporting 41 clinical trials worth around £36m.
