Explore what research we fund and where

We fund research into many heart and circulatory diseases across the UK. Explore where we are funding lifesaving research and clinical trials through our interactive visualisations.

Research funding across the UK

From Edinburgh to Cardiff, Belfast to London, we're supporting research projects as well as strategic investments including the Research Excellence and Accelerator Awards, Centres of Regenerative Medicine or the BHF Data Science Centre.

Use the interactive visualisations linked here to explore where we fund research projects, centres and staff in the UK.

Our research funding across the UK

We currently support over £430m of life saving research across 47 institutions in the UK to better understand, prevent, and treat heart and circulatory diseases.

Our strategic research investments

We fund research through a variety of mechanisms, including research centres and 4-year PhD programmes across UK universities.

Our research workforce

We support the work of over 1,200 research staff across the UK, including salaried research staff on BHF awards or award holders that are early career scientists through to BHF Professors.

Funding by condition

We're funding research to better understand, prevent and treat a broad range of heart and circulatory diseases.

Use the interactive visualisations linked here to explore the research we fund in a selection of heart and circulatory conditions.

Current funding by condition

We currently support over £430m of research projects across 47 institutions in the UK to better understand, prevent, and treat heart and circulatory diseases.

Our latest research investment by condition

In the 2023/24 financial year we awarded around £112m of research grants to better understand, prevent and treat heart and circulatory diseases.

Funding in clinical trials

Clinical trials provide crucial evidence that diagnostic tests or treatments are safe and effective. We fund clinical trials across a broad range of heart and circulatory conditions and their risk factors, such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease.

Use the interactive visualisations linked here to explore what types of clinical trials we are currently funding, either by type of research (prevention, diagnosis, treatment) or by condition.

Clinical trials by type of research

We fund clinical trials that aim to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart and circulatory conditions. We are currently supporting 46 clinical trials worth around £40m. They provide crucial evidence that diagnostic tests or treatments are safe and effective.

Clinical trials by condition

We fund clinical trials across a broad range of heart and circulatory conditions, as well as trials that aim to prevent or treat heart and circulatory diseases in conditions that increase their risk, such as diabetes and chronic kidney disease. We are currently supporting 46 clinical trials worth around £40m.
