Become a Heart Rider - Cycle London to Paris

When: 2 - 4 September 2017

Where: London to Paris

Coronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer, ruthlessly ripping loved ones away from their families, sometimes without so much as a chance to say goodbye.

But we’re fighting back. This September, we’re assembling a team of Heart Riders, ready to cycle 200 miles, raising money to fund research that will, one day, put a stop to the devastation heart disease can cause. And we want you on our side.

Unlike many similar events, we organise, fund and manage this event ourselves, meaning we can promise that 100% of the profits made will go towards this research.

How do I sign up?

BHF Supported rider  £300   SIGN UP
 Independent rider £150  SIGN UP

What can I expect?

We've given our historic London to Paris Bike Ride a makeover for 2017. A brand new route will take you through some of the very best countryside England and France have to offer - all leading to the most memorable of finish lines in the heart of Paris.

With a team 150 strong, you'll enjoy an amazing, camaraderie filled atmosphere - supported every mile of the way by our world class team, who have a wealth of experience in guiding cyclists throughout this epic challenge.

The event is an ideal experience to share with a team of friends, family or colleagues, but solo riders are also more than welcome - and will quickly make new friends to cycle alongside throughout the journey.

Our route is still being designed, using past participant feedback to guide us. We will update this page with more information as it becomes available, but in the meantime, here's a short summary of our itinerary for the weekend:

Day 1 – Cycle from London to the coast. Cross over to France via a ferry from Newhaven to Dieppe (4 hour crossing)

Day 2 – Cycle through some of France's most beautiful countryside

Day 3 – Paris here we come!

Day 4 – Travel home

Further information will be available in our event information booklet (coming soon).

Our route has been exclusively designed by Rough Ride Guide

Other things to budget for:

Accommodation

In order to keep events costs down, and give you control over where you stay, we do not book accommodation for any participants at this event. We will recommend accommodation for each night - this information will be available to download and sent to all signed up participants once the route has been confirmed.

We can also provide support in the booking and organisation of accommodation - if you require this please email our event manager Hannah: [email protected]

Food

We provide complimentary water and light snacks at the rest stops, however you will need to purchase your own meals (apart from the celebration dinner, which is included in your registration). Our event caterers will be at the start and the lunch stops each day ready to serve you. They offer a great meal deal and you can pre-order your food with them before the event.

Travel / bike insurance

We strongly recommend that you take out bike insurance in respect of this event in order to protect against theft, damage or loss. We also advise that you check your home contents policy (if you have one) to see what it covers. You are reminded that BHF cannot be held responsible for any damage to your personal items.

Meet your fellow participants

Join our London to Paris Bike Ride Facebook event page in order to receive regular event updates and meet your fellow Heart Riders before the big day.

Training support

You'll be cycling 200 miles in 3 consecutive days. The ride is ideally suited for regular cyclists, but is an achievable challenge for anyone with the right training preparation.  We'd recommend at least 3 months training, but longer may be required depending upon your fitness levels. For some assistance gearing up for the challenge, check out the advice available in our cycling training zone

The event itself is not a race. Participants are encouraged to cycle at their own pace, soak up the atmosphere and beautiful views and enjoy yourself.

Kit

All participants will receive a complimentary BHF branded cycling jersey to wear with pride at the event, which can be collected on the first day.

If you're after some additional kit to wear on the ride or during the training, check out our full range of cycling kit and equipment in our online shop. With all proceeds going towards our life saving research, it gives the term guilt free shopping a whole new meaning!

You're a Heart Rider - Spread the word

Signing up for this challenge is no mean feat and we want you to tell all your friends and family just what you're doing and why. To help you spread the word we've created a range of social media profile pictures for you to use. Choose your favourite, upload it and start telling everyone what it means to be a Heart Rider. Don't forget to include a link to your JustGiving page.

Get your family and friends involved

Our events cannot happen without the help of our fantastic volunteers. If you would like to help out in the lead up to this event or on event day then please get in touch with us and we will send you more information.

Your pedal power will save lives

Heart disease is the UK's single biggest killer. It strikes, often without warning, tearing loved ones away, sometimes without even a chance to say goodbye. This has got to stop. Through funding pioneering heart research, we are determined to put an end to the devastation heart disease causes. But we need your help to make that goal a reality. Through taking part in this event, you'll be raising money that enables us to keep up this work and helps to keep more families together for longer.

We are therefore asking all participants to raise £1,000 through their participation in this event, in support of our work

The event is organised, funded and managed by the BHF. All money generated goes towards the cost of putting the event on and our research.

How to reach your fundraising target

You're taking on an amazing challenge, and many of our participants surprise themselves with how easily they surpass their target every year, thanks to the overwhelming support from friends and family.

The easiest way to get sponsored is by setting up an online fundraising page. It only takes a couple of minutes to set up and you can then easily share a link to your page on Facebook, Twitter and by email so your family and friends can show their support for the amazing challenge you've set yourself. Make sure you keep it up to date too, share your story - tell people why you're taking part and how you've found your training ahead of the big day. Make your supporters feel like they're a part of your experience - it could make all the difference to your total.

CREATE A FUNDRAISING PAGE

We've also put together a short guide to help you make the most of your page.
It's not all about online donations either, check out these exciting ideas of other ways to get the pounds rolling in, and have a great time doing so.  There's also a fantastic range of fundraising resources available for you too.

500 Club

As you will be raising over £500 you will automatically be included in our ‘500 club’, an exclusive group of fundraisers who have raised over £500 for the British Heart Foundation. Before the event, you will receive one of our bespoke ‘500 club’ exclusive tops.

More information regarding the 500 club will be available soon.
