How were applications assessed?

Outline applications were assessed by our International Advisory Panel (IAP) who selected the shortlisted teams.  The teams were given seed funding to develop their ideas further for a full application (for further detail, please see our Guidance for Applicants document on the Application Portal).

What criteria were submissions assessed against?

Outline applications were assessed against the criteria described on our Application Criteria page.

Could people apply for the grant if they were not based in the UK?

Absolutely, the Big Beat Challenge was an international award and we welcomed applications based anywhere in the world.

Were people from any sector able to apply?

Absolutely, the Big Beat Challenge sought to bring people from a vast array of sectors together to unlock new ways of thinking and working, and to bring fresh perspectives to heart and circulatory research.

Will my project be considered for funding even though I was unsuccessful in receiving the Big Beat Challenge grant?

Unfortunately your application will not be considered for any of our other research awards.

Will this mean fewer funds for other BHF grants?

Absolutely not, the Big Beat Challenge is an addition to our research portfolio, not a replacement.

Did the application have to be in any specific area? Are there any specific research priorities that the BHF had in mind?

No, the Big Beat Challenge was open to any and all areas of heart and circulatory research.
