We will advance research

We will be even bolder in supporting the best ideas and brightest minds to advance the scale, scientific breadth and impact of cardiovascular research.

What we will do

At the heart of our strategy is continuing to fund the best minds and the brightest ideas to advance our understanding of all cardiovascular diseases and to develop the diagnostics, treatments and cures of the future.

However, the world is rapidly changing and we need to evolve our approach to make the biggest impact. We will expand the scope of our funding to capitalise on emerging opportunities in areas like artificial intelligence, data science and genomics. And we will strategically invest in areas of unmet need, to make transformational breakthroughs with the potential to save and improve countless lives.

Furthermore, while continuing to fund the very best discovery science, we will increase our focus on translating more of our discoveries into groundbreaking ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease.

Professor Nick Mills

BHF Professor and Edinburgh cardiologist Nick Mills is leading multiple studies to improve the speed and accuracy with which doctors diagnose heart attacks.

Our objectives

To achieve our strategy, we will:

  1. Grow the UK's investment in cardiovascular research, helping to close the funding shortfall in research to tackle cardiovascular diseases.
  2. Grow the strength, breadth and diversity of the UK’s cardiovascular research workforce, enabling it to power the discoveries of the future.
  3. Increase BHF’s investment in prevention research, innovation, and partnerships to stop heart disease before it starts.
  4. Significantly grow BHF’s investment in clinical and translational research, leading to a faster translation of scientific discoveries into patient benefit.
  5. Significantly increase BHF’s research investment in targeted strategic funding initiatives and grand challenges to discover the diagnostics, treatments and cures of the future.
