BHF's Chief Executive among top 10 CEOs in the UK

Our Chief Executive, Dr Charmaine Griffiths, has been named one of the UK’s top 10 CEOs based on employee reviews.

The award from recruitment website Glassdoor recognises Charmaine’s “exemplary leadership” in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Charmaine ranked fifth out of 50 top CEOs in the UK – the only woman and only charity chief executive to make the list.

Each year, Glassdoor examines reviews submitted by UK employees on its website, which includes ratings about an organisation’s CEO and senior management.

Charmaine secured the top five spot with an approval rating of 98%.

Charmaine said: “It is always a privilege to lead our incredible team and any award is a recognition of incredible the brilliant efforts across the BHF.

“There is no doubt that the pandemic has been the biggest challenge the BHF has ever faced. I could not be prouder of how our team rose to meet every challenge, and of their extraordinary efforts to support people with heart and circulatory diseases.

“And I’m just as proud that today, as we recover from the pandemic, our ambition to raise funds and power life saving research is stronger than ever.”

Leading through the pandemic

It is Charmaine’s first time on the list, having re-joined us as Chief Executive in February 2020. On her return, Charmaine was immediately faced with the task of leading us through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charmaine said that as a leader, she has found that “balancing kindness and empathy alongside clarity and courage” has been more important than ever during the pandemic.

Speaking to Glassdoor about what makes the BHF team so special, she said: “As a charity founded in research, taking action led by insight is important to us.

“We asked and listened to what mattered to colleagues throughout the pandemic and used it to steer our approach. Even when we’ve had to make tough decisions, we’ve always strived to share our thinking transparently and honestly.

“I’ve always said there is something magical about the BHF.  Many of us have lost loved ones too soon – and this lends an urgency and helps drive us to make a real difference.”

People who share our values

Charmaine added: “The BHF has always attracted the very best talent, and that makes us a team that is always learning and growing.”

“We love working with people who share our values of being compassionate, brave, informed and driven to make a difference for people with heart and circulatory diseases.

“We currently have a range of opportunities for outstanding people to join us across our award-winning Technology, Fundraising, Marketing and Retail teams. We are also always recruiting amazing volunteers who contribute in so many ways and are a huge part of our BHF family.”
