Pippa Middleton launches London to Brighton Bike Ride

Our Ambassador, Pippa Middleton, launches the 40th year of our flagship fundraising event, the London to Brighton Bike Ride.

In the event’s history, over 800,000 cyclists from all over the UK have taken part in the ride and helped to raise over £65m for our life saving research into heart disease.

Pippa, who raised over £15,000 for us cycling across America last June, will be taking part in the iconic event on Father’s Day this year (Sunday 21 June 2015) to celebrate the landmark year.

The London to Brighton Bike Ride was launched in 1975 by street performer Robert Stredder and his partner. They wanted to organise a bike version of the London to Brighton car rally. It has grown from 36 riders in the first year to over 25,000 cyclists and is now the oldest and largest charity bike ride in Europe.

Milestone year

On launching this historic event, Pippa says: “As a keen cyclist, I am thrilled to be involved in this milestone year of the London to Brighton Bike Ride. This event is testament to the fact that cycling is such a great inclusive sport that everyone can enjoy and at the same time, through the money raised, it continues to help millions of people affected by heart disease.

“Whether you want to ride as part of a team or go the challenge alone, registration opens on Saturday 17th January so sign up. I look forward to seeing you all at the start line in June.”

Tristam Jones, our Head of Events, adds: “The London to Brighton Bike Ride has gone from being a jaunt down to the seaside for a group of friends, to an event which people have on their bucket lists. Whether people take on the ride as a one off challenge or come back year after year, what is unchanging is the unity and commitment we see every year from thousands of people willing to helping others.

"We’re very proud of what this ride has achieved and thank all of those who have played their part.”

We are also pleased to announce that Tesco is the newest partner of our cycling series in the UK and abroad. Over the next three years, the UK’s biggest retailer will work alongside us to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity on people’s health through promoting the benefits of cycling and encouraging people to take to two wheels for the fight for every heartbeat.

Registration for the London to Brighton Bike Ride is now open. Sign up to take part in this legendary ride.
