1. Salmon
Salmon was far and away the most popular fish in our survey. Baked salmon served with asparagus was the most popular single salmon dish, although delicious suggestions from our Facebook fans included salmon kebabs; salmon steamed in lemon juice with chopped dill; and salmon baked in sweet chilli sauce.
Facebook user Sarah Smith wrote: “I like salmon baked in foil with noodles and peppers, spring onions, baby corn and mangetout” while Natasha Georgina Barrell said: “I like doing salmon in the steamer with butternut squash and swede with green beans.” Sounds good!

2. Fish pie
You can’t beat a traditional fish pie. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be unhealthy.
3. Mackerel pate
Mackerel pate is a popular choice, and here’s another dish that can be made heart-healthy. Facebook user Lorraine Work suggested: “Smoked mackerel pate made with low-fat natural yogurt, wholegrain mustard and lemon juice with oatcakes” while Alex Withnall’s recipe is “Mackerel pate made with low fat yoghurt, garlic and lemon juice.”
Or you can use tinned mackerel instead of tinned sardines in our recipe for sardine pate, which is low in saturated fat and takes just a few minutes to make.

4. Kedgeree
Kedgeree is traditionally made with haddock – but you can try our salmon version which contains healthy omega-3 fats.
5. Smoked haddock with poached eggs
You don’t really need a recipe for this one – but do remember that smoked fish can be salty. So if you go for this try to have a smaller portion, and balance it out by sticking to low salt choices at other meals during the day.

6. Mackerel with chilli and lime
Whole mackerel is another popular way of serving this oily fish. There has been some recent concern about how sustainable mackerel is - Cornish line-caught mackerel is the most sustainable choice, according to the Marine Stewardship Council, followed by British, Norwegian or European pelagic (shoal) caught mackerel. Icelandic and Faroese pelagic-caught mackerel is the least sustainable.

7. Other oily fish
Herring, sardines and sprats were all popular with our readers – and they’re full of heart-healthy omega-3 fats too.
