Exploring socioeconomic inequalities in coronary heart disease

We collaborated with the Strategy Unit to create a tool that explores socioeconomic inequalities in coronary heart disease pathways.

A tool created by the British Heart Foundation and the Strategy Unit illustrates the socioeconomic inequalities along the coronary heart disease (CHD) pathway for the first time.

It allows us to pinpoint where these inequalities lie, from risk factor identification and prevention, through to diagnosis, treatment and death rates.

It's important to look at inequalities across each part of the typical CHD pathway to identify which areas to target to close these gaps.

Key findings from the tool are:

  • premature deaths are more likely amongst patients from the most deprived areas
  • patients from the most deprived areas are more likely to be identified with risk factors
  • patients from the least deprived areas are more likely to receive preventative healthcare like flu vaccines, medications and elective procedures.
