Notes

  • Conditions: Data are presented for cardiovascular disease (CVD) overall and for individual conditions that fall within CVD, including coronary heart disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, heart failure and peripheral arterial disease.
  • Mortality: Age-standardised death rates (ASDRs) adjust for differences in the size and age structure of populations, allowing more meaningful comparisons between areas and over time.
  • Prevalence: Prevalence shows how many people are living with a condition. Figures in this dashboard are based on people recorded as diagnosed on primary care disease registers. Prevalence percentages are calculated using the number of people registered with GP practices as a denominator. Overall cardiovascular disease prevalence is an estimate based on BHF analysis.
  • Comparing areas: CVD is strongly associated with age. Figures that are not age-standardised will therefore partly reflect differences in the age structure of local populations. For example, areas with older populations would generally be expected to have more people living with CVD.
