Learn CPR to the beat of a BRIT nominee this awards season

As the bright lights of this year’s BRIT Awards are readied to celebrate the best of British and international music, we are urging the public to learn lifesaving CPR to a song from this year’s nominees.

Lifesaving Beats homepage

Our BRIT Awards playlist is part of our Lifesaving Beats campaign on Spotify, an initiative from the BHF to make it as easy as possible for people to learn CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

With the ceremony just days away on Saturday 11 February, we are calling on the nation’s music fans to learn lifesaving CPR during February’s Heart Month, with the message that you’re most likely to need these skills to save someone you know.

A recent BHF survey showed just half of people (51 per cent) in the UK say they would be able to perform CPR if a loved one had a sudden cardiac arrest in front of them, despite latest data showing that around 80 per cent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home.

The BRITs playlist has the top songs from this year’s nominees that can help you stay on the right beat when learning how to perform chest compressions.

Hit songs from A-listers like Harry Styles, Beyoncé, Lewis Capaldi and Dua Lipa could help you save a life.

Dr Charmaine Griffiths, our Chief Executive, said: “The BRIT Awards are a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on the best of British music, but this year they could also help you learn how to save a life.

“From Green Green Grass by George Ezra to Levitating by Dua Lipa, our BRIT Awards playlist showcases songs from nominated artists with the perfect tempo for learning lifesaving CPR.

"This fun playlist has a serious message at its heart. With over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year in the UK and a survival rate of less than one in 10, we need more people to have the skills to save a life. So, before you sit down to watch this year’s awards, take just 15 minutes to learn lifesaving CPR to the sound of one of this year’s top tunes. It could save a life.”

When someone has a cardiac arrest, immediate CPR can be the difference between life and death. But sadly, around a third of UK adults have never undertaken any form of CPR training.

Urgent need to boost CPR skills

Building on the success of our past advert starring Vinnie Jones that inspired the public to learn CPR to the rhythm of Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees, the Lifesaving Beats collaboration has expanded the potential for music to teach people CPR. This time – it’s been to your favourite tracks, whatever your taste.

Thousands have visited the Lifesaving Beats site since launch, and BBC News featured the best Christmas songs you can learn CPR to in December.

Artists like The 1975, Hot Chip, KT Tunstall, Calum Scott, Jungle, Becky Hill and Holly Humberstone have all shared on social media how you can learn CPR to some of their classic hits because they have the right tempo.

At lifesavingbeats.com, music fans can generate a playlist of their most listened to songs at the right tempo for CPR, select a track, and then enter the 15-minute CPR training.

Powered by our RevivR training tool, any song with a rhythm of 100-120 beats a minute is perfect for learning CPR to. Users can also search for songs or other users' CPR playlists, and share their playlists, as well as RevivR, on social media. If you don’t have Spotify, you can still access six playlists in six genres, curated by the BHF.

There are more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year in the UK, and with less than one in 10 people surviving, it’s important that everyone learns lifesaving CPR.

With around 80 per cent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happening in the home, learning CPR could help you save a loved one’s life in the ultimate medical emergency. Immediate CPR and defibrillation can more than double the chances of survival – yet surveys suggest that a third of adults across the country have never undertaken any form of CPR training.

There is an urgent need for more people to learn CPR, and the BHF is determined to reach as many music fans as possible.

BHF’s innovative CPR training tool RevivR is easy, quick and free – all anyone needs is a mobile phone and a cushion.

In 15 minutes, the training tool teaches the user how to recognise a cardiac arrest, gives feedback on chest compressions and outlines the correct steps of defibrillator use, giving anyone the confidence to step in and save a life in the event of the ultimate medical emergency. Thousands have so far used RevivR to learn this lifesaving skill.
