BHF-funded researcher wins The Great British Bake Off

We’re sending huge congratulations to the 2022 winner of The Great British Bake Off – BHF-funded researcher Dr Syabira Yusoff.

Syabira has baked up a storm in Bake Off’s famous tent this series, wowing the judges and millions of viewers with Malaysian twists on British classics, unusual flavours, and science-inspired treats.

She won Star Baker three times, excelling in custard, pastry and Halloween weeks, but it was an incredible edible sculpture in the shape of an orangutan that saw her crowned as Bake Off champion.

When she’s not tackling technicals or creating epic showstoppers, Syabira works with Professor Catherine Shanahan at King’s College London to understand why blood vessels harden as we age.

But clearly science isn’t her only talent after winning the prestigious Channel 4 baking show on Tuesday evening.

One of her stand-out bakes from her time on the show was an impressive Swedish pastry dessert cake called a Krokan in the shape of a double helix, in a nod to her passion for studying the human genome.

Dr Charmaine Griffiths, our Chief Executive, said: “Syabira has blown everyone away with her baking from day one, and as a BHF family, we couldn’t be prouder that she has taken home this much-deserved win.

“From the lab bench to the baking tent, it’s been incredible to watch her talents grow. We’d like to thank her for being such a brilliant champion of science while on the show, and we can’t wait to see what she does next.”
