About BHF

Today we launch our Annual Report and Accounts 2021/22

Today we published our annual report and accounts 2021/22, giving us a chance to pause and reflect on our recovery from the toughest challenge in our 60-year history.

Thanks to an astronomical team effort we have recovered with strength, created new ways to meet our objectives and funded even more lifesaving breakthroughs for people affected by heart and circulatory diseases. Through dark times, our people have shone – and we couldn’t be prouder of every single person who has played a part in getting us back on track.

It’s hard to recall, but as we started our financial year in April 2021, all of our shops stood closed during yet another lockdown and yet, on the day of reopening, our incredible team led our biggest ever day of trading, generating more than £1 million in sales. This commitment across our BHF team has characterised so much of our work over the last year, and it’s meant we’ve been able to invest £72.3 million in new lifesaving research.

Our research, funded solely by the generosity of our supporters, has led to significant breakthroughs including radical improvements in heart transplants for children; the use of revolutionary artificial intelligence techniques to diagnose those at risk of heart attacks; and critical progress in our ambition to find a cure for heart failure.

Thanks to our colleagues, volunteers, supporters and researchers, the progress we’ve made this year means we enter the next with renewed ambition, despite the challenges we face. We stand at a turning point in human history, on the cusp of major breakthroughs for people with heart and circulatory diseases. But these great leaps won’t happen unless we are relentless in our pursuit of the science and inspire the support to fund it.

Now is the time to invest in the big, bold ambitions that hold the potential to transform countless lives. Just like the winner of our Big Beat Challenge, which seeks to develop revolutionary treatments to halt, reverse and ultimately prevent conditions that can kill young people in the prime of their lives.

In the toughest of times, I could not be prouder that we’ve protected our research funding, made amazing discoveries and been there to support the millions of people affected by heart and circulatory diseases.

None of this is possible without the support of so many people. Every person we support, every life we help save, every scientific advance we make is powered by our BHF family.

You help power the science that saves lives, help fund more breakthroughs.
