BHF Centre of Research Excellence launches new Science at Heart competition

The BHF Centre of Research Excellence at Imperial College London has launched a new science competition to engage sixth form students with cardiovascular research.
Imperial researchers are encouraging teams of up to six students to design an ePoster. The aim is to illustrate a strategy for bringing hard sciences and biomedicine together to reduce the number of deaths and disabilities caused by heart and circulatory disease.
The prizes
Shortlisted teams will present their posters to a panel of judges and first, second and third prizes of £3000, £2000 and £1000 will be awarded to schools to support science-related activities.
Professor Dorian Haskard at Imperial College London’s BHF Centre of Research Excellence, who spearheaded the competition, said:
“We’re delighted to be able to launch our new competition, Science at Heart. This is a great opportunity for sixth form students to come together, think creatively, and put forward scientific solutions that could protect people from the devastation of heart and circulatory disease.”
Professor Metin Avkiran, our Associate Medical Director, said:
“Despite the immense and complex challenges presented by the pandemic, Covid-19 has shone a bright light on the value of medical research. Science has the power to save and improve lives and it is vital that we inspire and nurture the next generation of cardiovascular researchers. We hope this competition will ignite a fire in students and encourage them to embark on a scientific career.”
