Biscuits revealed as UK's favourite snack

Biscuits have been crowned the UK’s favourite snack in a survey we’ve released to encourage people to take on our Dechox challenge in March.

Whilst biscuits ranked at No 1 (42%), chocolate (41%) was nipping closely at their buttery heels.

Men were more inclined to reach for a biscuit to nibble on (44%) whereas chocolate was the favourite snack amongst UK women (44%).

Lockdown snacking

Alongside finding that the UK is bonkers for biscuits, the survey showed that 45% of us snack from boredom, a higher proportion than snacking from hunger. Also, it transpired that the majority of us are most likely to reach for our favourite snacks between 8pm and 9pm.

Staying inside more was also cited by over a quarter of people (28%) as a reason for reaching for the snacks, no doubt compounded by the current lockdown.

A generational difference was exposed in the way we choose to eat our chocolate. It was found that over 12% of young people (16-34 year olds) have eaten chocolate with a knife and fork, as opposed to just 1% of the over 55s.

Women are not the only chocoholics though, as the survey found that one in ten men (10%) have eaten their chocolate of choice on the toilet – most likely keeping it away from scavenging family members.

Take on Dechox+ this March

This survey was conducted as part of our Dechox Challenge campaign which asks people to give up chocolate for the month of March to help raise money for life saving research. This year, the we’re tasking participants to give up chocolate, sweets and fizzy drinks as part of Dechox+.

With the above findings demonstrating just how important biscuits and chocolate are to us, giving it up will be no easy feat. Dechox Warriors will be sponsored for their effort to help raise money for medical breakthroughs to help the 7.6 million people in the UK currently living with heart and circulatory diseases.

Emma Day, our Head of Dechox, said: “These survey results were intriguing for us to read here at Dechox HQ! It’s clear that the UK’s partiality to a sugary snack is at an all-time high so what better way to challenge yourself than to take on Dechox?”

“With the BHF in the midst of its biggest financial crisis in its 60-year history, we need fundraisers to take on sponsored challenges like Dechox to help us continue to fund life saving research into the world’s biggest killers, heart and circulatory diseases. This is a fun and personal challenge that will help us on our mission to beat heartbreak forever.”
