The National Council for Voluntary Organisations has today released guidance which recommends that charities should publish details of senior staff salaries on their websites.
In response to the recommendations, Phil Yea, our Chairman of Trustees said:
“Coronary heart disease is the UK's single biggest killer, permanently scarring the lives of millions.
"People are relying on our scientists to find the next research breakthrough and on our nurses and information services to care for those living with often devastating heart conditions.
"This responsibility means we need leaders of the highest calibre drawn from across the voluntary, medical and commercial sectors. In the financial year 2013 to 2014, our Chief Executive was paid £165,000.
"Salaries are set by an unpaid Trustee led group - looking at current market rates, the BHF’s senior salaries are substantially less than equivalent roles in other sectors.”

In the last 50 years the BHF has transformed the fight against heart disease. Last year our total income was £133.3m and we spent £120.2m on scientific research, prevention, treatment and care.
Last year saw significant developments – we awarded three new BHF Centres of Regenerative Medicine bringing together top researchers to investigate this exciting area of science. We expanded the help we provide heart patients by increasing the number of BHF supported healthcare professionals to over 950. Together, they helped over 250,000 patients who live every day with the daily demands and consequences of their heart condition. Our Heart Helpline provided vital information and support to over 30,000 enquiries from patients and their families.
