Wales: NCD prevention report
Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) cause many deaths and morbidities in Wales. NCDs (such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, lung disease, and liver disease) are responsible for at least 20,000 deaths every year in Wales - more than half of all deaths. But, as research progresses, we have come to understand that many of these deaths and morbidities can be prevented.
BHF Cymru has collaborated with Wales’s other leading health charities to set out our collective priorities for the next Welsh Government to improve the nation’s health and protect our NHS from the burden of non-communicable disease.
The next Welsh Government needs to commit to empowering people to make healthier choices through interventions to reduce smoking rates; levels of overweight and obesity; and alcohol consumption – all of which we know impact worse on the poorest in our society.
In the report, we are calling on political parties to commit to action on the ways tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy food and drinks are promoted and marketed, as well as greater availability of support and treatment services to reduce their impact and prevent thousands of deaths a year.
