Items we cannot accept
There are certain items we cannot accept due to legal and health and safety reasons. Before getting your donations ready, take a look at the following lists to check if we can accept your items.
Check your items
We cannot accept items that may be unsafe for children:
- car seats and booster seats
- cots, carry cots and mattresses
- highchairs
- inflatable beds, dinghies or toys for water
- playpens
- prams, pushchairs and buggies
- safety gates
- soft toys without a CE or UKCA CE label.
Due to the safety checks required for the resale of baby and nursery equipment, we can only accept these in a selected number of stores. Please contact our Customer Service Centre for more information on 0300 330 3322 or email [email protected].
We cannot accept the following items for safety and hygiene reasons:
- children's garments with drawstring hoods
- nightwear without flammable warning labels, including children's and adults' nightdresses, pyjamas, dressing gowns and bathrobes
- worn underwear or swimwear without a hygiene strip
- homemade knitted items of clothing.
We can accept adult fancy dress providing they contain 'keep away from fire' and 'low flammability' labels.
We can accept children's fancy dress costumes providing they contain a CE/UKCA mark. Alternatively they must have keep away from fire or low flammability labels.
We cannot accept the following electrical, oil and gas items:
- built-in kitchen appliances
- candles without instructions
- ceiling and wall lights
- electric blankets
- electric hoists
- electric showers
- gaming machines
- gas appliances
- gas bottles or cylinders
- oil filled radiators without a thermostat
- oil and gas AGAs
- oil heaters (mobile)
- oil lamps
- ovens with glass doors
- personal appliances such as electric shavers or foot spas, unless new and in sealed box
- petrol or diesel powered items due to their flammability when being stored
- power tools without instructions
- selected BEKO fridge/freezers models (check on https://www.electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/ for more details)
- stair lifts
- storage heaters (hardwired)
- sunbeds and tanning equipment
- tumble dryers
- washer dryers
- waste disposal units
- Whirlpool washing machines (2019 and 2020).
We cannot accept:
- items in poor condition
- upholstered items without fire safety labels
- carpet off cuts
- cushions, cushion covers and tailored upholstery covers (unless with fire labels)
- used pillows, duvets and quilts
- furniture painted with lead paint.
We cannot accept:
- home recorded DVDs, video and audio tapes
- home recorded computer games and software on recordable CDs and DVDs
- home printers unless brand new and boxed with ink supplies.
Due to legal reasons, and these items being undesirable, we cannot accept:
- items made from ivory
- real fur or fur trimmed items.
We cannot accept:
- personal appliances such as electric shavers or foot spas, unless new and in sealed box
- prescription spectacles.
We cannot accept:
- buoyancy aids, life jackets, inflatable boats or inflatable toys for water
- firefighting equipment
- safety helmets, including riding hats, crash helmets, cycle helmets
- safety harnesses.
Due to legal, health and safety reasons, we cannot accept:
- cigarette lighters, cigarette lighter refill canisters and ashtrays
- cleaning agents, solvents, adhesives
- cosmetics and toiletries unless sealed with ingredients listed
- flammable items such as firelighters, barbeque lighting tools
- fireworks (soak in water, bag and bin them)
- guns and ammunition
- medication including vitamins
- petrol or diesel fuelled DIY and garden tools
- perishable goods such as food and drink
- pointed items with potential for harm such as kitchen knives, blades, daggers and swords
- poisonous, toxic or hazardous substances including paint
- vaping products
- weapons including swords, sword sticks, crossbows and realistic toy weapons.
Any items that are classed as a weapon can be dropped off at your local police station.
