How we create our health information

We’re committed to producing high-quality information to help people manage their heart health. This page explains how we create accurate, trustworthy health information.

Our information

We provide expert, evidence-based information for people affected by heart and circulatory diseases. We help people to:

  • understand their condition or treatment
  • feel empowered and confident to manage their health
  • get the right support.

Our information is free of charge and available in a range of formats including:

Our health information is designed to be used alongside the treatment and care given to you by a healthcare professional. We recommend speaking directly to a healthcare professional about your health concerns.

Understanding heart and circulatory diseases

We provide information on a range of topics including:

We choose the topics by regularly asking people affected by heart and circulatory diseases what’s important to them and what questions they want answers to.

Find out how you can help shape our work.

Reliable and trustworthy information

British Heart Foundation is a source of support for millions of people each year because our information is accurate, reliable and trustworthy. We achieve this through:

  • thorough research
  • using the latest evidence from trusted sources
  • working closely with clinical experts
  • involving people affected by heart and circulatory diseases.

We review our health information at least every 3 years. Some of our editorial content may be older, but you can find the date of publication on our webpages and booklets.

Whenever we create or update our health information, we make sure it’s relevant for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

PIF TICK

We are proud to be members of the PIF TICK quality mark scheme. When you see the PIF TICK logo on our website, booklets or other resources, it means the information has been written by certified information creators.

The PIF TICK helps everyone identify trusted, evidence-based and accessible health information. You can learn more about the scheme on the PIF TICK website.

How we write

Our health information is written by a team with experience in creating trustworthy and accessible information. Our writers, editors and reviewers include registered dietitians and cardiac nurses with clinical expertise focusing on heart health.

All content is reviewed by an appropriate expert other than the writer before publication. This is usually a cardiac nurse or registered dietitian but may include doctors or other specialists.

We want our information to be relevant to everyone, so we aim to make it as clear as possible. We do this by:

  • writing in plain language
  • explaining medical words
  • highlighting important points
  • providing easy navigation and a clear structure
  • signposting to trusted sources for more detailed information.

Our health information talks to ‘you’, so everyone feels included. We will use the terms ‘men’ and ‘women’ or ‘male’ and ‘female’ where it’s relevant. For example, to help people understand how biological sex can increase the risk of developing heart and circulatory disease.

Help shape our information

We ask people affected by heart and circulatory diseases to help us create health information. You can help make our information inclusive.

Accessibility

Created by experts, some of our health information is now available in different formats including audio, braille, easy read, and other languages.

If you need information on a particular topic that is not available in the format you want, please let us know at [email protected]. We cannot guarantee we can always provide all information in the way you prefer, but it’s helpful to know this so we can plan new topics and formats in the future.

We are committed to ensuring that our website is accessible, regardless of ability or access to technology. You can read more about how our website is compliant and user friendly.

Get information in another format

Get our health information in audio, braille, easy read, large print, and different languages including British Sign Language (BSL).

Artificial intelligence (AI)

With the help of our clinical experts, we have created audio versions of some of our webpages using our voices and an artificial intelligence (AI) voiceover tool.

The information in the audio is written by our team and is not generated by AI. We do not currently use AI tools to create any other health information.

For more information on how we use AI at BHF, get in touch.

Feedback

We want to continue to give you the best standard of health information. If you have feedback you’d like to share with us, please get in touch.
