Starting a fitness journey and keeping going with it can be challenging. To keep yourself motived, look for these signs that your fitness is getting better.

1. You have more energy

One of the first signs you’ll notice when becoming more active is that you feel less sluggish. Exercising more regularly improves the flow of oxygen-rich blood around the body, so you’ll feel an extra spring in your step.

2. You can be active for longer

Have you noticed that you’re able to take longer walks, climb stairs more easily, or do more exercise without feeling as tired? This means your heart and other muscles are getting stronger and your body is becoming better at using oxygen and energy.

3. You recover more quickly after being active

If it takes less time for your heart rate to return to a more normal rhythm after exercising, this is a good sign that your heart and other muscles are adapting and becoming stronger. Feeling less tired and sore also means your body is getting better at repairing and rebuilding muscle tissue.

4. Your strength has improved

Perhaps you’ve noticed that you can lift heavier objects, do more repetitions of an exercise, or find it easier to carry bags of shopping. If so, this means your muscles are getting stronger. Having strong muscles can reduce the strain on your heart during everyday activities. It can also improve your balance which is important for helping to prevent falls.

5. You have better flexibility

If you can stretch further, move more easily, or have fewer aches and pains in your joints, it's a sign that your flexibility and mobility are getting better. This is helpful for your overall fitness and can also help prevent injuries when doing everyday tasks.

6. You’re sleeping better

As you improve your fitness, you may find that it helps regulate your sleep. And you’ll probably find yourself waking up feeling more rested and refreshed.

7. You feel happier

When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. These chemicals trigger a positive feeling in the body which can boost your mood and reduce feelings of stress. If you notice that you feel happier, less stressed, and more positive overall, it's a sign that your fitness routine is benefiting your mental wellbeing.
