Join us again in 2020 at the 30th anniversary of the BHF Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim. Thousands of swimmers will be heading into the English Channel to swim the 1.4 miles between Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers in one of Europe's biggest charity swimming events.

But, did you know, 2020 is the 30th year the BHF have run the Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim? We've got plenty of celebrations to add to the event so why not sign up and join us next year to celebrate.


2020 BHF Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim

Take on our classic Bournemouth Pier to Pier Swim on Sunday 12 July 2020. Setting off from Bournemouth Pier, you'll swim 1.4 miles parallel to the shore as you make your way to the finish line at Boscombe Pier.

(14-17 year olds)

You must be 14 years old to take part in the swim, anyone under 18 can't swim alone, they must be accompanied by an adult in the water for the duration of the event.


Your entry fee covers the cost of organising the event, but it's the money you raise that powers our life saving research, so we ask our heart swimmer to set themselves a target of at least £200. 

Please be aware that your swim packs will be sent out no sooner than four weeks prior to the event. 

Your Bournemouth Pier to Pier entry includes

The start

The event takes place very near Bournemouth Town Centre and there are plenty of pay and display car parks nearby. Follow the signs as you approach the town, and remember to bring some change with you.

By car

There are plenty of car parks in the town centre, which is near Bournemouth pier. Follow parking signs once you reach the town centre.

By public transport

Bournemouth rail and bus stations are a 20 minute walk away, or just a five minute taxi ride.

Get fit for your Bournemouth Pier to Pier Open Water Swim

We strongly recommend training for this event particularly if you are not familiar with sea swimming. It is quite different from swimming in the local pool and can be challenging.

Make sure you have the right kit

For safety reasons, you'll need to wear the swim hat, timing chip and wristband we send you. We recommend wearing a wetsuit, although this isn't compulsory.

Take a look at our recommended kit list for what to wear on the day, and what to bring with you. You'll receive your participant number in the post just before the event.

The Bournemouth Pier to Pier course

Setting off from Bournemouth Pier, you'll swim 1.4 miles parallel to the shore as you make your way to the finish line at Boscombe Pier. Lifeguards will be present in the sea and along the shore at all times, and full First Aid cover will be provided by St. Johns Ambulance.

General facilities

Changing facilities in the public toilets are available at Bournemouth Pier. There will be a luggage transport service to take your belongings to the finish – one small piece of luggage only please and remember to attach the luggage label provided. There are toilets available at both start and finish locations.


Refreshments can be purchased from the many cafes at Bournemouth and Boscombe Piers. All participants will receive water and a free hot drink once their swim is completed.


Your friends are family are very welcome to join in cheering at the finish line at Boscombe Pier. Ask them to look the part and ramp up the red! We are afraid that dogs are not welcome at this event.
