Thanks to donations, we've funded research which has contributed to:
- the improvement of pacemakers
- the use of defibrillators in British ambulances
- making heart failure easier to diagnose.
But heart and circulatory diseases still kill 1 in 4 people in the UK. With your support, we'll keep funding research to improve millions more lives.

A hidden condition in a healthy person
Aged 27 and having been married for only 7 days, Corey was rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing ice hockey. He’s since been diagnosed with an inherited heart condition, Brugada syndrome, which BHF-funded Professor, Elijah Behr, has dedicated his research career to.

A shock to the heart was the only way out
Angie was taken to hospital with a rapid heart rate. She had previously been diagnosed with a faulty gene, that can lead to cardiomyopathy - where the structure of the heart is affected and can reduce its ability to pump blood around the body. BHF-funded research has helped discover many of the genes involved in cardiomyopathies enabling quicker diagnosis and treatment.

A connection between stroke and heart disease?
Having suffered a stroke just weeks earlier, and with a history of heart attacks in his family including his brother at only 44-years old, Steve was worried that there was something seriously wrong when his heart rate more than doubled. Stroke and heart disease are often connected and share the same risk factors. That's why we fund research into all heart and circulatory diseases.
