Steve's increased heart rate was a sign that something was wrong

Despite being fit and healthy, Steve was admitted to hospital when his heart rate doubled within an hour.

Steve attended St George’s A&E when he noticed that his heart rate had doubled within an hour. Having suffered a stroke just weeks earlier, and with a history of heart attacks in his family including his brother at only 44-years-old, Steve was worried that there was something seriously wrong with his heart and circulatory system.

A family history of heart attack, and concerns that he may have inherited a condition known as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), left Steve and his wife Julia very concerned. Life after stroke is daunting and understanding treatment available can be scary for patients.

Thanks to BHF funded research, Professor Joanna Wardlaw is looking into drugs that she believes could offer a new treatment for one of the most common types of stroke. These new drugs may help to reduce the damage to the arteries in the brain that cause the stroke.

But we can’t stop there, there’s still so much more to do because nothing is more important than the people you love. With your help we can help find better ways to diagnose, prevent, treat and eventually cure conditions like these. To support our life saving research, please donate today.
