Benefits of volunteering

There are lots of benefits to volunteering, such as developing your skills, gaining qualifications and supporting a cause you care about. Whatever your reason for joining, you can expect to have lots of fun and meet some great people.

Gain transferable skills and work experience

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to develop core skills that will be useful in any workplace such as teamwork, communication, resilience and taking initiatives.

Enhance your CV

If you want to stand out from the crowd, your volunteering experience will set you apart from the competition by demonstrating your motivation and positivity. Take some time to consider what sort of role will address any skills gaps on your CV. For example, as a customer service volunteer, you will gain experience in dealing with the public. As a warehouse volunteer, you will not only gain an awareness of safe working practices for lifting and storage but also problem solving and organisational skills.

Access to qualifications

As a BHF volunteer you may be eligible to work towards an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in customer service and retail. Each year over 700 of our volunteers gain this nationally recognised qualification.

Work towards your Duke of Edinburgh’s award

We’re an approved activity provider for the Duke of Edinburgh award which is valued by colleges, universities and future employers. If you are aged 15 – 24, you can work towards your award in one of our shops.

Meet new people

You will be joining a friendly team where you will get to meet people from all walks of life. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and be part of your local community.

Do something you enjoy

If you love the buzz of a big event, you might enjoy marshalling at one of our 50 bikes rides, swims, hikes and runs taking place all over the UK. Or maybe you have an eye for antiques – you could use your expertise to pick out collectable items that people donate to our shops. Maybe you enjoy assembling flat pack furniture… if so, you could be a huge help at one of our furniture and electrical stores.

Build your confidence

Volunteering is a great way to expand your horizons. You will be meeting new people and trying your hand at things that you may otherwise not experience. Doing something useful and productive with your spare time is a great confidence booster.

Improve your fitness

Volunteering can be a great way to get more active. Whether you’re working on the shop floor, sorting through stock or helping out at an event, you’re likely to be on your feet and on the move. If you’re looking for more of a physical challenge, some of our warehouse roles involve heavy lifting and assembling furniture.

Make a difference and help save lives

There are 7 million people in the UK living with cardiovascular disease in the UK. The money we raise in our shops, through fundraising and at our events is used to fund research to save more lives. We couldn’t do this without the support of our volunteers.
