The New Horizons Grant scheme is no longer available.

In response to the BHF strategy refresh, we will be championing ambitious research projects across our funding schemes.

A key pillar of the new Research Strategy is broadening our science base to embrace new disciplines that will impact on health. We aim to build research capacity in these areas including data science, STEM, omics, behavioural, implementation science and beyond. Multidisciplinary proposals with expertise from beyond the traditional biomedical fields will be welcomed across BHF funding mechanisms.

If you were considering applying for a New Horizons Grant, your proposal could be eligible for a BHF Project Grant.

Our peer-review process will continue to focus on scientific excellence, potential for impact and value for money.

Update on BHF Project Grants

Recognising the significant impact that increased resources can have on scientific discovery, we acknowledge that historical funding thresholds may have limited the ambition of BHF Project Grant proposals. To help unlock the full potential of cardiovascular research, we will raise the funding threshold to £500,000, and, in exceptional circumstances, extend the funding duration to up to 4 years.

Our peer-review process will continue to focus on scientific excellence, potential for impact and value for money.

The changes will be in effect for applications received after 27 August 2025
