NHS Long Term Plan

The BHF played a significant role in the development of the NHS Long Term Plan pushing to make heart and circulatory disease a priority for the NHS.

The BHF played a significant role in the development of the NHS Long Term Plan (LTP), pushing to make heart and circulatory disease a priority for the NHS and highlighting the areas where we can have the greatest impact to improve outcomes for patients. To learn more about our priorities to improve health and care for people with heart and circulatory disease, you can read our Turning Back the Tide publication below.

Following the publication of the LTP in January 2019, the BHF is now a delivery partner for the plan, supporting the implementation of the deliverables related to heart and circulatory disease. Working alongside NHS England and NHS Improvement, as well as other key stakeholders in health and care, we are striving to ensure that the implementation of the ten-year plan drives significant improvements patients’ outcomes and experience of care. In this role as a delivery partner, the BHF has representation on Cardiac and CVD Prevention Delivery Board as well as the overarching Cardiac Respiratory Board. The BHF are also part of expert advisory groups covering topics such as:

  • cardiovascular disease prevention
  • out of hospital cardiac arrest
  • heart attack
  • heart failure and heart valve disease
  • cardiac rehabilitation.

Alongside our national role, we are working to support local health and care systems in delivering the plan, with a focus on addressing unmet need and unwarranted variation.
