Our impact on cardiac surgery research

Thanks to our incredible researchers, more people are surviving heart surgery than ever. Learn about the impact the research we've funded has made.

Cardiac surgery is any surgery that involves the heart or the blood vessels in the heart. We've funded research into cardiac surgery since we were founded in 1961. We've awarded over 500 grants worth more than £80m.

Generating new knowledge

Over the last 60 years, our understanding of how cardiac surgery affects the body has drastically improved. BHF-funded research has played a key role in this. It's helped us to recognise why some people's bodies reject their heart transplant and how we can stop this happening.

Developing new technology

Researchers we've funded have developed new methods to improve the outcomes of surgery. They've also found new ways to help surgeons prepare for surgery. BHF-funded researchers developed a liquid which temporarily stops the heart and protects it during surgery.

Influencing clinical practice

From developing new surgical procedures to building processes which identify high risk patients, BHF-funded research has made a huge impact on the way surgery is practiced.

Improving patients’ lives

Research we've funded into cardiac surgery has led to innovations which help the lives of patients. Thanks to advances in paediatric surgery, people born with congenital heart disease now live longer lives.
