Notes

  • Conditions: Data are presented for cardiovascular disease (CVD) overall and for individual conditions that fall within CVD, including coronary heart disease, stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA), atrial fibrillation and heart failure.
  • Mortality Age-standardised death rates (ASDRs) adjust for differences in the size and age structure of populations, allowing more meaningful comparisons between areas and over time.
  • Prevalence: Prevalence shows how many people are living with a condition. Figures in this dashboard are based on people recorded as diagnosed on primary care disease registers. Prevalence percentages are calculated using the number of people registered with GP practices as a denominator. All prevalence measures are for the adult population. Overall cardiovascular disease prevalence is an estimate based on BHF analysis.
  • Risk factors: Obesity and smoking prevalence are estimated from health survey data, expressed as a proportion of adult population size. Hypertension and diabetes prevalence are based on diagnosed cases recorded on primary care disease registers, expressed as a proportion of people registered at GP practices. Timeseries for risk factors are currently under development.
  • Hospital admissions: Conditions are grouped using ICD-10 codes. Conditions falling within codes I00-I99 are categorised as CVD. Myocardial infarction (I21-I22) is a subset of coronary heart disease (I20-I25).
