BHF partners with Panacea Innovation to launch CardioStars

We have joined forces with Panacea Innovation to launch CardioStars, a unique programme that will equip researchers with the entrepreneurial and business skills to become the science innovators of tomorrow.
CardioStars is designed to give scientists and clinicians the tools they need to transform research breakthroughs into innovations that deliver real-world benefits for heart patients around the world. Tailored to the needs of the cardiovascular research community, the fully funded programme will offer a high-quality, high-intensity introduction the fundamentals of research translation.
In line with our strategic objective to increase the translation of the research we support, to bring the benefits to patients, we are excited to partner with Panacea Innovation, a pioneering life sciences and healthcare venture-building platform. The collaboration will offer our funded researchers access to networking and mentorship opportunities, as they join a vibrant community of entrepreneurs, scientists, investors and service providers.
Accelerating research translation
We’re encouraging our funded researchers, at every stage of their career, to apply to CardioStars, to arm themselves with the entrepreneurial skills that will help bring cutting-edge science to patients, faster.
The two initiatives on offer include:
Action: A four-week programme culminating in a one-day bootcamp, offering an introduction to research translation and entrepreneurship, aimed at scientists with little or no experience in research translation.
Develop: An eight-week programme, centred on a three-day bootcamp, where scientists will learn how to translate a research idea into product or service and transform this into a successful enterprise. Participants will develop a business strategy to pitch to Panacea, the BHF and external investors.
Business bootcamp for researchers
Professor James Leiper, our Associate Medical Director, said: “The British Heart Foundation is thrilled to announce the launch of CardioStars, in partnership with Panacea Innovation. This comprehensive programme will offer the cardiovascular research community a crash course in business and entrepreneurship. CardioStars will offer guidance on developing a business strategy to advance research discoveries, helping bridge the gap between idea, innovation and impact.
“By providing a platform for collaboration, mentorship and networking, CardioStars will give our researchers the skills they need to ensure their pioneering discoveries benefit patients sooner."
Dr Ross Thomson, an academic cardiologist and programme director for CardioStars, said: “I’m delighted that the BHF has partnered with Panacea to deliver this ground-breaking programme. The UK has a fantastic track record of research and discovery in cardiovascular medicine, but it takes far too long to bring these innovations to patients. CardioStars will raise awareness of research translation with everyone working in the field, and will provide clinicians and scientists with the tools they need to embark on this important endeavour.”
