Three quarters of UK adults have learned CPR - but less than half would not feel confident to perform chest compressions if someone was having a cardiac arrest, new research shows.
The YouGov survey of over 4,000 adults was commissioned ahead of Restart a Heart Day on Sunday 16 October.
The annual milestone aims to raise awareness of how cardiac arrests can happen to anyone at any time, and increase the number of people trained in CPR.
Events are taking place across the country, both in person at schools, communities and workplaces, and online.
Learn or refresh your CPR skills
Just one in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10%.
With the majority of cardiac arrests happening at home, learning or refreshing CPR this Restart a Heart Day could equip you with the skills you need to save loved one’s life.
Alongside our campaign partners Resuscitation Council UK, St John Ambulance, British Red Cross and UK ambulance services, we’re urging everyone to take part in Restart a Heart Day this year to help build up a nation of lifesavers.
Our comment
Our Chief Executive, Dr Charmaine Griffiths, said: “Every second counts when someone has a cardiac arrest, and immediate CPR and defibrillation can make the difference between life and death. We want every person in the UK to have the confidence to do CPR and use a defibrillator so that they could save a life, even a loved one. Luckily, learning CPR and becoming familiar with how a defibrillator works is much quicker and easier than you might think. Restart a Heart Day is the perfect moment to pick up a new lifesaving skill in just 15 minutes.”
Restart a Heart begins on Sunday 16 October and continues throughout the month.
