Professor Metin Avkiran receives prestigious award from the International Society for Heart Research

Professor Metin Avkiran, our Associate Medical Director, has received the International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) 2022 Distinguished Leader Award in recognition of his leadership contributions to promoting the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in the cardiovascular sciences, the core mission of the Society.

The ISHR was founded in 1968 and is a global Society with 7 Sections and several thousand members across the world. 

The Distinguished Leader Award is one of the Society’s highest honours, with the recipient selected by the World Council. It is awarded to individuals who have made sustained outstanding contributions to the ISHR and its mission.

Over the course of a research career that has spanned over 35 years, Professor Avkiran’s work has focused on the exploration of cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate cardiac function in health and disease, including evaluation of the therapeutic potential of drugs targeting those mechanisms. He was appointed Professor of Molecular Cardiology at King’s College London in 2001 and he has been our Associate Medical Director since 2016.

Professor Avkiran’s leadership roles within the ISHR have included his service as the Society’s President (2013-2016) and Secretary General (2004-2010).
