What is the group all about?
Sheffield Open Heart Club (SHOC) was started in 1984 by patients and hospital staff, to provide support to cardiac patients' having open heart surgery at the Northern General Hospital Sheffield.
SHOC has a team of volunteers who have all been through heart surgery and offer a patient perspective. They visit patients on the Chesterman Unit, prior to heart surgery and share their experience/answer questions of both their surgery and recovery, helping allay patients. Volunteers attend the Pre -surgery Information sessions at the hospital as well as visit the wards and can offer a telephone contact.
SHOC meets socially during the year for pub lunches, Christmas party and an annual general meeting is held in July.
There is a newsletter twice a year for members to keep in touch with SHOC's activities.
SHOC provides specialised equipment for the benefit of cardiac patients at the hospital through fundraising and donations.
