Medical Research Council
Start date: 01 January 2014 (Duration 5 years)
UKCRC Public Health Research Centres of Excellence (renewal: years 6-10)
The British Heart Foundation is part of a consortium of funders that are renewing their support or five Centres of Excellence in Public Health Research, based in Newcastle, Cardiff, Belfast, Cambridge and Nottingham. The Centres of Excellence will strengthen research into complex public health issues such as obesity, smoking and health inequalities. They bring together leading experts from a range of disciplines and will work in partnership with practitioners and policymakers to tackle public health issues. By researching the underlying reasons for different health-related behaviours and how people and groups might respond to different interventions, the Centres will make an important contribution to designing strategies to prevent chronic diseases. The five Centres are: the Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR), the Centre for the Development and Evaluation of Complex Interventions for Public Health Improvement (DECIPHer), the Centre of Excellence for Public Health (Northern Ireland), the Centre for Translational Research in Public Health (Fuse), and the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (UKCTCS).
