Von Willebrand factor: structure, activity and action

The functional role of the C-terminal domains of Von Willebrand Factor
Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a large and complicated blood protein that is necessary for normal blood clotting. Low levels of VWF result in a tendency to excessive bleeding and high levels are associated with thrombosis (when a blood clot forms inside a blood vessel). Because of its size, complexity and numerous interactions, we do not yet understand how a large portion of VWF works. Dr Thomas McKinnon and colleagues from Imperial College London will investigate VWF’s structure, activity and interaction with other key components of the blood vessel and blood such as collagen and platelets. This will allow a better understanding of VWF’s role in cardiovascular disease and lead to improved therapies for abnormal blood clotting.
