University of Cambridge

Start date: 01 April 2019 (Duration 5 years)

Research Excellence (round 3) - University of Cambridge

By investing in research the BHF are supporting scientists to make potentially life-saving discoveries, which could help us beat the heartbreak caused by heart and circulatory diseases across the world. But sometimes it takes more than a one-off project to find the answers. Rather than award money to a specific project, the Research Excellence Awards support a wide range of infrastructure and collaborations between researchers at each university. This flexible funding model means that innovative research can rapidly get off the ground without delay. It encourages experts from diverse fields to come together to tackle the most challenging problems. From biologists to engineers, physicians to mathematicians: the varied perspectives and knowledge fosters creative thinking and innovation. The awards also help to secure the UK’s future as a world-leader in heart and circulatory disease research, by attracting and nurturing future leaders, and encouraging the agile exploitation of new ideas. These awards now fund work in six of the UK’s leading universities, including this award to the University of Cambridge. Led by BHF Professor Martin Bennett, the team will focus on diseases of the blood vessels, genomics and energy use in the heart and circulatory system. They’ll also use population sciences, studying large groups of people to look at all the factors which affect health outcomes, such as health care, social and economic factors, government policies and genetics.
