New horizons in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging

Professor Jurgen E Schneider (lead researcher)

University of Oxford

Start date: 01 October 2011 (Duration 5 years)

New horizons in preclinical cardiovascular magnetic resonance

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a technique used to investigate the structure and function of the heart. MR spectroscopy is a specialised technique which measures the chemical reactions and processes that provide the energy for heart function (a process called cardiac metabolism). Combining new techniques and technologies could become an important tool for comprehensive examination of the heart. Dr Jurgen Schneider and colleagues from the University of Oxford propose to develop innovative MR techniques for a complete experimental characterisation of the heart. These new techniques include MR imaging of ischaemia (where the blood supply to the heart is blocked off), imaging of the fine structure of the heart muscle, of scar tissue (which develops after a heart attack) and investigation of cardiac metabolism. The methods developed in this project will be useful to aid diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.
