Identifying how arteries age in humans

Mechanisms and markers of normal vascular ageing
BHF Professor Martin Bennett has been awarded a three-year grant to investigate how blood vessels age. As we get older our blood vessels change: cells begin to die and scar tissue accumulates in the vessel walls, making them less elastic. Professor Bennett wants to know why. Looking in mice, he will measure the effects of ageing cells on blood pressure and on the cells inside the artery walls. The team hope to identify a ‘signature’ of markers that appear when vessels are aging that can be used to measure aging in human blood vessels. Age-related changes taking place in the artery walls can contribute to high blood pressure and lead to heart attacks and strokes. So identifying markers of ageing could also help monitor the effectiveness of treatments that try to slow down ageing.
