Joint funding with Wellcome Trust: Funding to support the acquisition of 800MHZ and 600MHz spectrometers and resources for automation to be housed within current NMR Facility in Centre for Biomolecular Spectroscopy
Researchers within the BHF Centre of Research Excellence at King’s College London are leading the way in the fight against heart disease with the continued help of the BHF. The BHF is contributing £1 million towards new a world-leading centre for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to support heart research. NMR spectroscopy is a laboratory technique that allows doctors and researchers to analyse chemical compounds and determine their structure. This BHF funding will help King’s to upgrade their existing NMR Facility and maintain their world-leading research, by purchasing two state-of-the-art NMR spectroscopy systems. This new facility will support a large community of researchers within the King’s BHF Centre of Research Excellence, who are studying diverse research themes such as heart structure, drug discovery and heart metabolism. It may lead to new ‘biomarkers’ - indicators that pinpoint heart disease risk or identify which patients respond best to treatment. It may also help identify new compounds that could treat heart disease. Scientists will be able to take advantage of the latest advances using NMR spectroscopy to study more compounds faster, at a higher resolution and with more sensitivity. It will also help to foster closer relationships between lab and clinical scientists, to work together to provide major new insights into heart and circulatory disease.
