A trial of inhaled frusemide for advanced heart failure

Dr Shakeeb Moosavi (lead researcher)

Oxford Brookes University

Start date: 01 December 2014 (Duration 3 years)

Inhaled frusemide for dyspnoea relief in advanced heart failure

This clinical trial will investigate whether an inhaled form of frusemide provides relief from breathlessness in patients with advanced heart failure. People living with heart failure have symptoms such as breathlessness and tiredness because of how hard their heart has to work to perform everyday tasks. Although these patients take medicines to help their heart function better, over time they may need higher doses to achieve the same relief and side effects may develop. Dr Shakeeb Moosavi and colleagues have been awarded £255,000 over three years to test, in 40 patients with chronic (long-term) heart failure, whether giving a drug called frusemide that is breathed in as a mist will help improve their symptoms of breathlessness and fatigue. This treatment will be given in addition to their usual care. The patients will be monitored closely and their shortness of breath will be recorded when they are at rest and after six minutes of walking. The researchers will also ask to the participants to complete a questionnaire about their quality of life. The team will compare the group’s results with those from a group of participants with chronic heart failure who are given a dummy (placebo) treatment. If results are promising from this study then a larger trial could be done involving more patients and a longer duration of treatment.
