Providing cutting-edge heart imaging technology

Professor Stefan Neubauer (lead researcher)

University of Oxford

Start date: 01 August 2015 (Duration 1 year)

Funding towards a new 3T MR system and installation costs

The BHF is helping researchers at the University of Oxford lead the way in heart imaging by contributing £1 million towards a new state-of-the-art cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging system. CMR is an imaging technology that allows doctors and researchers to visualise the heart and circulatory system in a non-invasive way. It can provide information on heart anatomy, tissue characteristics (such as if there are scars or inflammation present) and blood vessel anatomy, including blood flow. The University of Oxford Centre for Clinical Magnetic Resonance (OCMR) has housed a team of top clinical heart and MRI scientists since 2002. OCMR has been a major success, and in 2013, the BHF contributed £500,000 towards an expansion of the building, to add an additional floor. This second round of BHF funding will help to provide the latest CMR technology – a state-of-the-art imaging system called a 3T MR system. This new machine will allow researchers to continue carrying out world-class multidisciplinary clinical heart research in Oxford, and retain and further cement their status as a world-leading CMR unit.
